Chapter 2: Core Assumptions of Skillful Teaching

Photo from  programmingtutor.org In Chapter 2 of Brookfield's book "The Skillful Teacher: On Technique, Trust, and Responsiveness in the Classroom", he lists his four core assumptions about skillful teaching. After reading this chapter twice, here are my thoughts on each assumption: 1. Skillful teaching is whatever helps students learn. This assumption reminds me of Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences; not all students learn the same way. Brookfield encourages us be open to different approaches even though it may be unconventional, counter-intuitive and feels "unprofessional". As long whatever we do helps the students learn, it is encouraged! 2. Skillful teaching adopt a critically reflective stance towards their practice. I need to constantly reflect on my practices, whether I am teaching in the best way possible. I should not be either constantly praising or criticizing myself without action. PIDP 3260, Professional Identity

Onto the next course! I started this blog with the course PIDP 3100 Foundations of Adult Education. Now, I am on my second course PIDP 3260 Continuing Professional Development. I'm profoundly Deaf since birth and fluent in American Sign Language (ASL).  I am currently working as ASL consultant for a TV show being produced here in Vancouver. It's been a great experience being in a such new environment. To teach the film crew ASL, I posted video clips on Instagram specifically for them:  ASL for film . I took the  Teaching Perspectives Inventory and my results show that my style is Apprenticeship and Nurturing. I agree with the results because as I teach ASL, I incorporate a lot of mentorship, patience and moral support!  Some of my Personal and Professional Values: - Being Deaf is a cultural identity, not a disability.
